Shrewsbury Town (a) – 08/08/15

Shrewsbury Badge

Ahead of the season opener, I spoke to Shrewsbury fan, Jon Sutton, about his newly-promoted teams’ chances in League One, as well as thoughts on Millwall and the upcoming game…

Name: Jonny Sutton

First Shrewsbury game: May 5th, 1990, v Preston – we won 2-0!

Greatest moment following Shrewsbury:  The Conference Play-Off Final in 2004 when we beat Aldershot on penalties, to get back into the Football League at the first time of asking. After getting relegated out the league without a whimper the previous season and seeing other teams drop to the Conference and struggle to get back, there was just a huge feeling of joy and relief when Trevor Challis buried the winning penalty!

The start of a new season, this time in League One – what’s the buzz around the club like?: There’s a sense of excitement about being back in League One, but cautiousness, too. There are a lot of big clubs in this division and I think we are wary about our previous outing in the third tier, which was a bit of a disaster!

How do you think Shrewsbury will fare in the third tier this season?: I think we’ll hold our own; we’ve got a great manager at the helm and the squad has a good mixture of youth and experience. I’ll go mid-table!

Likewise, how do you think Millwall will do? What’s your views on their chances, signings etc?: Millwall are a big club for this division and will be wanting to bounce straight back to the Championship. The return of Steve Morison is a good move for both him and the club and I can certainly see Millwall pushing for automatic promotion – play-offs at worst.

Who are Shrewsbury’s ‘ones to watch’? Who should the Lions be looking out for?: We have a great back line, lead by youth prodigy, Connor Goldson, who I have no doubt will be playing at a higher level sooner rather than later. Ryan Woods (midfielder) is another product of our youth system who has a big future – he controls the middle of the park like he’s a seasoned pro.

How do you see the game going?: It’s a tough opener for us, but we are strong at home. We’re like to play either a 5-3-2 or 4-4-2 system. I’ll go for a 1-1 draw!

Jon’s Team Prediction: Leutwiler; Sadler, Goldson, Ellis, Tootle; Brown, R. Woods, Lawrence, M. Woods; Barnett, McAlinden.

Shrewsbury Town v Millwall kicks off the League One season on Saturday 8th August. Kick-Off at New Meadow is at 3pm.
